BIOGRAPHY
GRETCHEN HULL is a freelance recitalist, chamber musician, and teacher based in Bergen, Norway. She has given recitals... for numerous concert series throughout the US East Coast including a fully televised recital for WSKG’s TV series Expressions.

In the course of her studies she gave a lecture-recital on 20th century piano literature of unusual and often unearthly beauty by a group of lesser-known Norwegian composers (Christian Sinding, David Monrad Johansen, and Geirr Tveitt), whose music she performed in many venues on the East and West Coasts in her recital tour, “The Glacier is Silent.”

In 2015 she was a semifinalist in the Pianale International Academy and Competition in Schlitz, Germany, and she has also performed in masterclasses for many prominent artists, including Jerome Rose, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Jon Nakamatsu, Justas Dvarionas, Akiko Ebi, and Sonia Lee (harpsichord).

Gretchen completed her doctoral degree in 2019 at Temple University (Philadelphia, USA), where she studied piano performance in the studio of Charles Abramovic as a doctoral fellow for four years. Her dissertation was written on the signification of the “sublime,” a dramatic, wild, and disarming aesthetic finding expression in much of the music of Romanticism. Currently, Gretchen is a faculty member at Pianoskole.no (Bergen) and the Csehy Summer School of Music (USA), and is also sometimes heard playing organ or harpsichord.

Until her recent relocation to Bergen, she was an adjunct professor of Piano and Music History (antiquity to late Baroque) at Eastern University, and had been the pianist of the Philadelphia-based piano trio Trio Amaranth. Gretchen received her master’s degree at Temple University and her undergraduate degree from Houghton College, where she studied under Leon Fleisher student William Newbrough.
