BIOGRAPHIES  

The mezzo-soprano and contralto DANIELA IANCU JOHANNESSEN lives in Bergen, where she is currently working with Bergen National Opera and the Edvard Grieg Choir. She has an active career both as a soloist and as a choir member.

Iancu Johannessen graduated from the music conservatory of her native town Timisoara in Romania. Here she finished her master’s degree in singing and interpretation of contemporary music, with the renowned singer and professor Ionel Pantea as her teacher.

Daniela has a long and varied career as an ensemble singer, but also as a soloist in operas and oratories. Her roles include Azucena and Ulrica, in Verdi’s operas «Il Trovatore» and «Un ballo in maschera», respectively, at the Romanian National Opera in Timisoara. She has also sung the roles as the Forester’s wife and the Owl at Bergen National Opera’s production of Janáček’s opera «The cunning little vixen».

Johannessen’s solo appearances in vocal symphonic works and oratories include Haydn’s The Creation, The seven last words of Christ, and Stabat Mater, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation mass, Beethoven’s 9th symphony, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Mendelssohn’s Eliah, Handel’s Messiah, Schumann’s Paradis and Peri, Bernstein’s Mass and Verdi’s Requiem.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MAI GOTO is a graduate of Osaka University of Music, Japan, where she studied with Atsuhiko Shimizu. She continued her piano studies with György Nádor at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, and in 2012 she finished her master’s degree at the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen, with Signe Bakke and Torleif Torgersen as her piano teachers.

Ms. Goto is the recipient of numerous awards from music contests, including the 1st prize in the “24th International Music Competition Rovero d'Oro” in Italy, 2009.

Mai Goto is currently living in Bergen, where she has an active performing career. She has frequently performed in the concert series at the Siljustøl Museum. In 2013, she was the pianist in the production “Nina Grieg – A great little woman” in Grieg’s villa, Troldhaugen, which was later performed in Provence, France. In the same year, she was soloist in Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto no. 2 on a US tour conducted by Trond Sæverud, and in 2014 she was soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 5 with the University of Bergen Symphony Orchestra.

Since 2013, Ms. Goto has performed annually for the “Grieg in Bergen” concert series, together with violist Oliviero Hassan and violinist Michael Süssmann.

In 2016, as composer and arranger, Mai Goto developed and performed “Issun Boshi,” a musical drama based on a traditional Japanese story, as well as “Klovnen Klem”, a musical drama for children.
In 2017, she was a soloist at the lunch concert series at Troldhaugen, gave solo piano and chamber music concerts for the ‘Grieg in Bergen’ festival, and toured in Italy, Belgium, Cyprus and Spain. In 2017-2018, she also began performing as a duo with professor David Hebert (voice and trumpet), with whom she has given concerts for university music departments in Japan, Norway and Poland. In 2018 she has written original music for a new drama production called «Musikken i Underverden» (Music in the Underworld) with the professional actress Karin Stautland. For the summer of 2018, she has been contracted for about 35 performances as a soloist and accompanist for singers in the «Grieg: Concert & Story» project, and continues with several evening concerts for the Grieg in Bergen festival.
