BIOGRAPHY

SKALLSJØ SOMMARORKESTER was founded in 2013 by Carl Vallin and Gustav Wetterbrandt, who were then 17 and 16 years old. It is a Gothenburg based string ensemble that aims to show a different side of classical music to a new audience. From the first project in 2013 the ensemble rapidly advanced to become a force of its own in Swedish musical life, especially regarding the ”rebranding” of classical music. The tour of 2016 included three concerts in the German region of Hessen and local newspapers described them as “Swedish jewels”. The repertoire over the years has included works such as Bartok Divertimento, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Suk and Elgar serenades for strings, numerous works by Atterberg, Grieg’s Holberg Suite as well as accompaniment of piano concertos by Mozart and Chopin.

The musicians of Skallsjö Sommarorkester study at various conservatoires around Europe such as Mozarteum (Salzburg), The Guildhall School (London), Norges Musikhögskole, Barratt due Musikinstitut, Edsbergs Slott, Kungliga Musikhögskolan and Musikkonservatoriet in Copenhagen. They have played with soloists such as Colin Stone, Retorica Duo and Matilda Paulsson.

Since 2017 the ensemble plays entirely without a conductor and aims to enhance and expand the chamber musical qualities of orchestral playing. Ever since the start of the orchestra, as a group of teenagers in 2013, there has never been any professional coaches involved. The aim is to strengthen and make use of the motivation and often unrelieved creativity within music students.

In the summer of 2017 Skallsjö Sommarorkester was invited to be a main feature in the 15th Lidköping Music Festival, where they played four different concert programmes in three days. In January 2018 the ensemble was awarded the Guido Vecchi Scholarship as the first ever orchestra to receive the award.

Since 2014 the orchestra annually produces a music video based on a classical piece, with the ambition of reaching out to a younger audience. In 2015 the rights to their video “Holberg Suite” was bought by Swedish public service TV-company, SVT. It was broadcasted several times during the spring of 2015.
